District Updates

  • Olentangy Orange High School Principal Monica Asher will resume her role today following a district investigation into a staff newsletter she issued on November 10. The district determined that the message violated policies requiring neutrality on political issues, as staff must use discretion and avoid expressing personal opinions in their professional roles. While acknowledging the policy breach, Superintendent Todd Meyer affirmed Asher’s commitment to unity and inclusivity, noting she has taken responsibility and issued an apology. Asher, who has served as principal since 2022, remains a valued leader, with the district confident in her growth from this experience.

  • The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has agreed to rehear a case involving the Olentangy Local School District's anti-bullying policies, which include measures against the misgendering of transgender students. This decision follows a previous ruling that upheld the district's policies. The rehearing is scheduled for March 19, 2025, and will involve all 16 active judges of the court. The lawsuit, filed by Parents Defending Education, argues that the district's policies infringe upon First Amendment rights. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for how schools address issues related to gender identity and free speech.

Random Stuff

  • Tardigrades, tiny creatures also called water bears, are some of the toughest animals on Earth. They can survive in the vacuum of space and even fix their DNA after being exposed to deadly radiation. Their superpower comes from a special protein called Dsup, which protects their DNA from damage. In 2007, they became the first animals to survive unprotected in space, enduring extreme cold, intense UV rays, and no air. Scientists are studying them to learn more about DNA repair and radiation resistance, which could help with cancer treatments and even space travel.
